A Safe And Secure Place!
Somewhere deep inside, you and I are wired by the Lord God to seek out a safe and secure place. For most, our home is that place where we feel safe and secure. But, this is not the case for many of the people I know.
The house in which they grew up was filled with physical abuse, psychological harm, or sexual exploitation. For others, the house in which they grew up was filled with neglect, abandonment, and inattention. For still others, the house in which they live now is filled with violence, manipulation, and a lack of nurture/love.
And yet, each of my friends are still longing for a safe and secure place in which they can know real peace and joy and love. Although they may not have experienced it for a long time (or maybe ever!), they know they are wired by the Lord God to seek out a safe and secure place.
The challenge for most of us is we often look in the wrong places for the things we need most. We expect other people or other things to provide us a safe and secure place. We end up putting unrealistic expectations on them and elevating our expectations to a level where they will not likely be met.
And yet, you and I still need a safe and secure place.
I need a place where I am loved and appreciated for who I am and not for what others need me to be.
I need a place where I am safe and at peace not because someone tells me I should be but because I really am safe and secure.
I need a place where my true self is set free to be all that Jesus intends me to be without the fear I put on me or the expectations others put on me.
I listened to a sermon last weekend. It was pretty good. Somewhere in the middle of the message, the first two verses of Psalm 91 were referenced. The speaker made a good point and I learned something new about the text. I was grateful Jesus spoke to me through the text and through the speaker.
But, there was something more Jesus wanted me to know. In the text, I was reminded I can find a safe and secure place in Jesus. In Psalm 91:1-2 the Psalmist writes;
“You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.’”
Jesus reminds us that our safe and secure place is found in Him. True peace and joy, true love and acceptance, true strength and courage are found in Jesus.
We will not find our safe and secure place in a house or in another person. We will not find our safe and secure place in a job or in a home security system. We will not find our safe and secure place in a bottle or in porn. We will not find our safe and secure place in our popularity or in our status. We will only find our safe and secure place in the Lord.
In Psalm 91:4 we hear that it is in the presence of the Lord God that we find the safe and secure place for which our soul longs. The Psalmist writes; “…under his (the Lord God) wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler (a safeguard).”
I am learning this truth in a new way. The house in which we live is a construction zone. It does not feel like a refuge or a sanctuary. It does not feel like a sacred space or a safe place.
The flooring, the drywall, and the paint provide no peace or love or joy. The brick and mortar cannot provide what I can only know under the wings and in the shadow and in the presence and of the Lord God.
It is only when Jesus draws near to me and I draw near to Jesus that somewhere deep inside I know I am wired by the Lord God to seek out a safe and secure place near the Son of God. When I experience the presence of Jesus and know that He provides me a safe and secure place, my heart takes delight in the Lord.
Take Delight In The Lord!
