Call Someone…Today!

Call Someone…Today!

Several years ago, there was a song with the line; “Here’s a quarter, call someone who cares!” (“Call Someone Who Cares” by Travis Tritt).  Although there is some sharp sarcasm in that statement, it strikes close to home for all of us.

We want someone to care about us.

We need someone who cares about our struggles and our victories, our fears and our sadness, our hurt and our happiness.  We need someone who cares about our anger and our angst, our doubt and our defeat, our confusion and our courage, our insecurity and our indescribable joy.

We need someone who cares!  It’s why we long to live in community with other people.  We want to them to love us and we want to love them.  The Lord God created us to be loved and to love.  Life is not full until we have a community with whom we can share our lives and our love.

We all need someone who cares enough to listen to our heart, our mind, and our soul.  We need someone to care enough to listen when times are good and when times are difficult.  We need people with whom we can share our greatest joy and our deepest struggle.

In I Thessalonians 2:8 (NRSV) we hear; “So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.”  The Apostle Paul shows us the importance of sharing our lives and our love with one another.  Paul says he cares enough about the people in Thessalonica that he is sharing his life with them.

Our caring for one another is not random; it is a purpose-full caring!  In I Thessalonians 5:11 Paul writes; “Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.”  The purpose of our caring for one another is to encourage and build up.

I invite you to reflect for a moment.

Who have you encouraged this week?

Who have you built up this week?

Who have you helped to have a better life this week?

In another letter to another church in another city, Paul gets more specific about how our caring for one another looks.  In I Corinthians 12:26 Paul writes; “If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.”

We share in each other’s…

…struggles and successes

…hurts and happiness

…defeats and victories

…depression and delight

…fear and faith

…sadness and rejoicing

…cowardice and courage

…weakness and strength

…because we are called to be one together.

The Apostle Paul encourages Christ-followers to do life together with other believers.  We gather with other believers not just for worship or study or serving, but to genuinely care for one another.  The church is where we can find people who care enough to listen.

There will be times when we need the Lord God to listen with a caring and compassionate heart.  In I Peter 5:7 (NLT) we hear; “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”

Your Heavenly Father gave you His only Son to show how much He cares for you.  The Son, Jesus, gave His life on a cross to show how much He cares for you.  The Spirit fills our lives with His presence and power to show how much He cares for you.

When you know that another person or that Jesus cares enough to listen, your heart will be filled with delight in the Lord.  I invite you to care enough about another person that you listen to their story.  Call someone today!

Take Delight In The Lord!
