Freedom And Hope!

Freedom And Hope!
As we walked up to the church for worship last Sunday morning, we saw about ten people standing outside. Each one of them was looking up and pointing at something. It was a bit unusual to say the least!
It took me a bit to see that which had caught their attention. Finally, I saw a young bald eagle perched on top of the large white cross. It was quite the sight…quite the sign!
The cross is a sign of our Savior’s love; Jesus gave His life so we could know His amazing love, His complete forgiveness, and His constant and eternal friendship!
The eagle is a sign of our nation’s values; at its best the United States is strong and courageous, compassionate and just, and a place of freedom for every person.
When I saw the eagle perched on the cross I was inspired.
I remembered our country was founded on core Christian values.
I remembered some difficult struggles when our country turned to Christ for guidance.
I remembered that our country has always produced currency with the words “In God We Trust.”
At the same time, I saw the eagle perched on the cross I was a bit saddened.
I remembered when the national anthem was honored with each person holding their hand over their heart and proudly singing.
I remembered when the “Pledge Of Allegiance” was recited by every student at the beginning of the school day.
I remembered when the Christian church took too much for granted and daily prayer in schools went away.
I experienced a variety of emotions last Sunday morning. But mostly, I walked into the church inspired and even more prepared to worship the Lord.
First, my hope for our nation increased when I remembered the freedom and justice and happiness promised to every person. These are core values that have been part of our nation from the beginning. Yes, our nation has some struggles. But, when we remember and apply our nation’s core values, there is hope and a future.
The Israelite people had been in exile (like slaves!) in a foreign land for over 70 years. They had lost hope in the strength and future of their nation as well as the love and power of the Lord God. And yet, when things for the nation of Israel seems the most bleak, the Lord gives a message to a preacher to restore hope.
In Jeremiah 29:11-12, the preacher tells the discouraged nation; “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you.”
Maybe it is time to pray for our nation to be restored by the Christ upon whose life and love our nation was given birth.
Second, my devotion to Jesus was stirred when I remembered the abundant life and eternal life promised to every person. Jesus lived and died and lived again so each of us could live an abundant and empowered life now and have both the promise and experience of eternal life when we die.
During the first century, the nation of Israel was ruled and oppressed by the Roman government. Life was extraordinarily difficult, hope was all but gone, and there was little joy in living. The people were tired and discouraged. The Lord God saw the plight of the people and sent His Son to give them hope, love, and a new faith.
In John 3:16, Jesus promises eternal life to those who love Him. Jesus says; “…everyone who believe in him (Jesus) may not perish but may have eternal life.” In John 15:10, Jesus promises abundant life now to those who love Him. Jesus says; “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
Maybe it is time to rekindle our love for and trust in the Christ who came to show us how much strength and courage and love He is willing to give us when we ask and when we trust.
An eagle perched on top of a cross is a symbol and a sign. A symbol of the earthly kingdom we know as the United States and a symbol of the kingdom of God we know in our relationship with Jesus. I saw a sign there is a future with hope and a Savior who loves us.
I am hopeful for both kingdoms because the promises of s can be trusted!
Take Delight In The Lord!
