I Am Powerless; God Can Help!

I Am Powerless; God Can Help!

I don’t know how to fix it.  I have tried everything; I don’t know what to do next!  I feel powerless and, at the same time, I am compelled to do something to make a difference in the situation.

His attitude was filled with a sour sarcasm that left me feeling put down and pushed away.  Every time I spoke, he responded with a glance that was filled with disdain and contempt.  His face was painted with rage and his heart was overflowing with hatefulness.

I felt powerless to do anything that might make a difference for him.

I had tried patience and kindness and empathy.  They were a dead-end that changed nothing.  I had tried a mild word of correction and a strong word of encouragement.  They were not welcome and made no difference.

I felt powerless to do anything that might make a difference for him.

Sometimes I convince myself to try one more time.  Sometimes I convince myself to try harder.  Sometimes I convince myself to not give up.  And yet, when I feel powerless I don’t have the energy to try another time, I don’t have the strength to give more effort, and I don’t have the desire to keep striving.

I feel powerless to do anything that might make a difference for him.

I remembered a Psalm I have shared hundreds of times with people who don’t know where they will muster up the energy or the strength or the desire to try to help one more time.  In Psalm 121:1-2 we hear; “I look to the hills!  Where will I find help?  It (my help) will come from the Lord, who created heaven and earth.”

I am powerless; God can help!

My help comes from the Lord God who is the creator of all that lives and breathes…even the difficult person in my life!  I look to the Lord for help when I feel powerless and helpless.

I look to the mountains to the west of our home in Loveland, Colorado.  I see their strength, their majesty, their beauty.  The mountains are a reminder that the Lord who made the mountains is still creating today.  My Creator can provide the help I need when I feel powerless to do anything more.

I am powerless; God can help!

Sometimes I am so busy trying to fix something or someone that I forget the Lord God will help you and me with everything that comes our way.  In I Corinthians 12:6 (CEV) Paul writes; “Yet the same God works in all of us and helps us in everything we do.”

The Lord God will “…help us in everything we do.”  Not somethings…everything!  The dishonest person at work, the passive aggressive person in our family, or the judgmental neighbor next door.  The abortion that still haunts us, the divorce that still financially wrecks us, or the missed promotion that still discourages us.  The lack of desire to read my Bible, the reluctance to volunteer in the community, or the hesitation to help a person in need.  The Lord God will help us in everything we do.

I wonder if you know someone who needs to be reminded today that our God will help us.  No matter how powerless and helpless they feel right now, Jesus will provide the help they need in that situation or relationship.

Take a moment over a cup of coffee this week to encourage that person.  Listen to their feelings of powerlessness.  Share God’s promise in Psalm 121.  Commit to praying for them each day for the next week.

The Lord will help those who feel powerless and helpless.  And when the Lord helps us, our hearts will be filled with joy, gratitude, and a deep delight in what the Lord is doing.

Take Delight In The Lord!

Doug
