Our Lord Come!

Our Lord Come!
It was a few years after I gave my heart, my mind, and my soul to Jesus that I became convinced Jesus would soon return to our world. The more I read my Bible, the more I listened to the words of Jesus, and the more I sought the Spirit’s leading, the deeper the conviction grew that Jesus’ second coming was soon.
The second coming of Jesus is not merely theoretical or theological. The second coming of Christ is a truth upon which I can place my hope, my future, my eternity. The ancient prayer of the Church is often my humble prayer; “Come, Lord Jesus, Come!”
At the conclusion of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the first century church in Corinth, Paul shares his conviction that Jesus’ second coming was imminent. In I Corinthians 16:21-24 Paul writes; “I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Let anyone be accursed who has no love for the Lord. Our Lord, come! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love be with all of you in Christ Jesus.”
Paul writes a hopeful word, a loving word, a saving word to the Christ-followers in Corinth; “Our Lord, come!” The Apostle Paul was absolutely convinced that Christ would return very, very soon. Paul believed in Jesus’ first coming when He was born as a baby in Bethlehem in the same way he believed that Jesus’ second coming as the King of King and Lord of Lords at the end of the age was about to take place.
The Bible is filled with the promise of Jesus’ second coming. Here are a few examples.
In Revelation 1:8 Jesus says; “’I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’”
In Revelation 22:20 Jesus says; “Surely I am coming soon.” Then John, the author of the book of Revelation, writes; “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!”
In II Peter 3:10 the Apostle Peter writes; “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be destroyed with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.”
In I Thessalonians 5:2 the Apostle Paul writes; “For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.”
Our Lord Jesus will come sooner than we expect. Jesus says He will return like a thief in the night; i.e., unexpectedly!
Many of us miss the point of the Book of Revelation. The point of the Book of Revelation is not necessarily to predict the time or the details of Jesus’ second coming. Instead, the Book of Revelation is primarily about a call to get prepared and always be prepared for Christ’s return.
Even though we do not know the time of Jesus’ second coming (even Jesus does not know!), we can be prepared. We do not need to know the day or the time of day to be prepared. We do not need to know the spiritual implications of what is happening in the social or economic or political arenas of the world to be prepared. We do not need to know the details of Jesus’ second coming to be prepared.
We can be prepared for Jesus’ second coming!
First, make sure your relationship with Jesus is healthy and holy. Only those who love the Lord Jesus with all of their heart, soul, and mind will be received when Jesus returns. In Matthew 22:37, Jesus says there is only one commandment; “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.”
I acknowledge that Jesus is the Son of God, my Savior. I ask Jesus to forgive all my sin and to cleanse my heart of all the residue of sin. I invite Jesus to set up His kingdom in my heart as I commit to serve Jesus as my Savior and my Lord. I invite the Holy Spirit to fill me with His presence and power.
Second, pray for Jesus to return soon. We can pray the prayer that the Apostle Paul prayed; “Our Lord, come!” Or, we can pray the prayer that the Apostle John prayed; “Come, Lord Jesus!” Or, we can pray the prayer that the ancient (and modern) church prayed; “Come, Lord Jesus, come!” Let’s pray for the return of Jesus!
Third, trust that when Jesus comes again, He will recognize you as a child of God. You are a son/daughter of our Heavenly Father redeemed by the power of Jesus’ death on the cross, filled with the Holy Spirit for which Jesus prepared the way, and living with the risen Christ who is your Lord. May your faith in Jesus give you the assurance He knows you are His son/daughter.
When I was a teen-ager, I was part of the Boy Scouts. One of the teachings that was pounded into our young heads was the Boy Scout motto; “Be Prepared!”
The Apostle Paul was prepared for the second coming of Jesus and he invited the church in Corinth to be prepared, too. The Apostle John was prepared for the second coming of Jesus and he wrote the Book of Revelation to encourage Christ-followers like you and me to be prepared for the second coming of Christ.
Be prepared for what Jesus is about to do in your life today. And, be prepared every day for the second coming of Jesus at the end of the age.
Live and love today like Jesus is coming back to receive you today! When you live and love with this anticipation and assurance, your heart will fill with delight in the Lord.
Take Delight In The Lord!
