A Constant Guard!

A Constant Guard!

It felt as if the whole world was attacking me.  There were accusations about my character, my faith, and even my love for my wife.  There were attacks against our young children, poisonous claims made to our friends, and lies shared with my boss.

It was a time in which I began to doubt Jesus and His calling on my life.  And then, the Holy Spirit provided a five or six people to be a constant guard over me.  If it were not for those few people, I am not sure I would have come through to the other side of those attacks.

Sometimes we need someone to be a constant guard for us.  Someone who is wiser, someone who is more experienced, and someone who is still holding tight to the Lord God.  We need a constant guard who will go to any length to protect us, care for us, and lead us to a safe place.

Here is the fourth attribute of the character of God; the Lord God is our constant guard.

In Psalm 91:7-8 we hear; “A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.  You will only look with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.”

We are reminded there are times when it seems everything and everyone around us is falling apart.  In those times, the Lord God is our constant guard.  The Psalmist reminds us that all the destruction and devastation and despondency “will not come near you” because the Lord God is our constant guard.

When everything was falling apart around me and most everyone seemed to be attacking me, the Lord God was my constant guard.  The Lord used other people to guard my mind from terribly negative thoughts, guard my heart from deep sadness and fear, and guard my soul from a deep dryness.

One listened and then offered wise counsel.  One showed up and prayed with me when I could no longer pray.  One invited me to their home to enjoy a time of refuge.  One reassured me Jesus would not abandon me in the darkness.  Each person was part of the way in which the Lord God was constantly guarding me.

I know that it is much easier to look back and see how the Lord God was working through a few people to be my constant guard.  I can see it so clearly now.  But, during the attack it was not so easy to see.

The Psalmist writes; “You will only look with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.”  We are reminded there is a time coming when we will see the ways in which the Lord God is being our constant guard.  We may not see it now, but we WILL see it!

I imagine you have a friend who is under attack right now.  Your friend may be close to giving up or giving in.  A moral failure looks more and more like a possibility.  A crisis of faith looks like it is just around the corner.  A deep depression looks like it could come and conquer.

You are here for your friend.  The good news is the Lord God is a constant guard for your friend.  There is more good news; the Lord God may choose to use you to provide the constant guard your friend needs most during all the attacks.

I invite you to call your friend and set a time the two of you can visit over a cup of coffee or a sandwich.  Be the Lord’s constant guard for your friend this week.  When you do, both of your hearts will be filled with delight even when the darkness seems to be winning the battle.

Take Delight In The Lord!
