Salvation Is From The Lord!

Scripture
“The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; he is their refuge in the time of trouble. The Lord helps them and rescues them; he rescues them from the wicked and saves them because they take refuge in him.” Psalm 37:39-40
Salvation Is From The Lord!
The source of salvation is often debated. It is debated between different world religions and spiritualities and Christian churches.
David must have been confronted with similar debates. His clarity in Psalm 37:39 is absolute. David writes; “The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord…” For David, there is no question; salvation is from the Lord God!
My salvation is not the result of my worth or my work. My salvation is not the result of my goodness or my gains. My salvation is not the result of my greatness or my glory. My salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone!
In Romans 5:1-2 the Apostle Paul writes; “Therefore, since we are justified by faith, wehave peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God.”
My salvation is based on Jesus’ worth as the Son of God, Jesus’ work on the cross, the goodness of Jesus’ amazing love, the gains of Jesus’ resurrection, the greatness of Jesus’ power and provision and protection and presence, and Jesus’ glory as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
I know in my heart, mind, and soul that my salvation is from Jesus. However, sometimes I work as if Jesus is not quite able to accomplish all the work of forgiveness, redemption, and salvation in me. In other words, sometimes I work to earn and/or be deserving of my salvation because I am convinced myself that Jesus needs my help!
David knew better. It’s why he writes in Psalm 37:39; “The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord…” Salvation does not start or end with you or with me. It begins and ends with the Lord God as we see in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
Christ-followers will occasionally find themselves praying for a deeper trust in the Father’s love for them and in Jesus’ work of salvation in them. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves salvation is from the Lord. We can ask Jesus to help us to trust His gift of salvation even more than we trust our own worth and work.
Like the Apostle Paul writes in Romans 5 our salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone! During the Protestant Reformation in the Christian Church, Latin words were used to define this belief; i.e., Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, and Solo Christo.
Jesus is my Savior!!! My job will not save me, going to worship will not save me, my family will not save me, reading my Bible every day will not save me, being good will not save me, fasting will not save me,
doing no harm will not save me, being a good person will not save me, serving the poor will not save me, living a moral life will not save me, etc. My salvation is from the Lord; my salvation is by God’s grace alone, through faith in Jesus alone, in Christ alone!
In John 14:6 Jesus says to the Apostle Thomas; “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
If you or someone about whom you care is not sure from where our salvation comes, take a moment this week to pray. As you pray, remember the words of David in Psalm 37:39; “The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord…”
Maybe it is time to ask Jesus to give you and your friend the assurance (confidence!) of salvation.
Reflect
As you think about your salvation, are you depending more upon your goodness and your good works and your practice of spiritual disciplines than you are upon the gift of salvation through the goodness and work and holiness of Jesus? What shift in your thinking would help you trust your salvation is the gift of the Lord God working in you rather than something you have somehow achieved.
Pray
Lord God, I confess it is easy for me to slip back into my feeble attempts to work for your salvation, to earn your favor, and to convince myself I deserve your love. Forgive me for my pride. Remind me that my salvation is from you…a free gift purchased by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. I surrender my heart, my mind, and my soul to you today. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Act
Write a few sentences describing what salvation from the Lord means to you today. Write a brief description of what salvation by God’s grace alone, through faith in Jesus alone, in Christ alone means to you today. Read John 14:6 morning, mid-day, and evening for the next 21 days.
