Jesus Created It All!

A few weeks ago, my wife and I had some friends over to the house for dessert. Somewhere in the conversation, someone commented, “Jesus created everything. It was from the very beginning that Jesus created everything!”

For a few moments while we ate our Italian Crème Cake, our attention was focused on Jesus as our creator. We were reminded Jesus created you and me and every creature and every thing!

My friend’s comment has stuck with me. The following morning, I remember feeling a bit more conviction and clarity in my belief that Jesus created the world.

Most Christians agree God is our creator. Although they may disagree about how creation has and is taking place, they believe God has His hand in the creation of all that is. However, Christians sometimes forget that more specifically it is Jesus who created all things.

In his letter to the church at Colossae, the Apostle Paul affirms Jesus is the one who created all things…visible and invisible.In Colossians 1:15-17 Paul writes; “He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, for inhim all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and inhim all things hold together.” 

In verse 16 Paul says;

+“…in him (Jesus) all things in heaven and on earth were created…”

+“…things visible and invisible…have been created through him (Jesus)…”

+“…thrones or dominions or rulers or powers…have been created through him (Jesus)…”

+“…all things have been created through him (Jesus) and for him (Jesus).”

I admit that when I think about the creation of the world, I usually think of God the Father as the creator. The Apostle Paul challenges me to consider that Jesus was not only present when all things were created, Jesus is the one who created all things.

Sometimes we focus so much upon Jesus being born as a baby in Bethlehem that we fail to remember Jesus existed with God the Father and God the Spirit before He was born as the son of Mary. The Apostle Paul states that Jesus existed with God the Father and God the Spirit before anything else was created.

In Colossians 1:7 Paul writes; “He himself is before all things, and inhim all things hold together.” You can also consult some of the ancient creeds of the Christian Church to hear a similar assertion that Jesus existed from the beginning. Take a look at the Nicene Creed (325 A.D.), the Apostle’s Creed (140-180 A.D.), the Chalcedonian Creed (451 A.D.), and the Athanasian Creed (5^th Century A.D.).

We worship a Savior who has existed from the beginning of time, not just a human being born in Bethlehem who was no more than a great preacher, healer, teacher.

We worship the Son of God who was not only present when the world was created, but was the One who created everything and everyone.

We worship the Lord of Lords who stands above all powers, all kingdoms, and all authorities with greater power and greater wisdom and greater presence than any one and anything in creation.

We worship the Creator (Jesus!) who is still making all things new and making all people new as an act of love rather than a Creator who created once and not again.

To believe Jesus created all that is in our world and has given its care and stewardship to me keeps me humble in the responsibility and in awe in the presence of its beauty.

To believe Jesus’ creative activity is still at work in the world is an invitation to keep my eyes open to the next new thing Jesus is doing.

To believe Jesus created me calls me to trust the Son of God knows me and loves me because He made me. Jesus has a purpose for my life, a calling to my ministry, and a plan for my eternal life.

In Colossians 1:16 Paul writes; “…for inhim (Jesus) all things in heaven and on earth were created…” When I trust Jesus as my creator as well as my Savior, delight begins to well up in my heart when I see a beautiful sunset, a baby held in its father’s arms, or the manifestation of Jesus’ presence. I am grateful!
