A Life Worth Living!

David learned a great deal in his life. He did his best to live as someone devoted to loving and serving and trusting and obeying the Lord God. Of course, there were failures and missteps and sin as well as great victories and growing faith and restored hope.

David was not a perfect person nor was he always one who stayed close to the Lord God. And yet, he shares what he learned in his life in a way that might encourage you and me. Throughout the Psalm we get a picture of a life worth living that is built on the foundation of a Lord worth loving.

Consider some examples from Psalm 37.

A life worth living looks like…

               Taking delight in the Lord God

               Committing your way to the Lord God

               Waiting patiently for the Lord God

               Being generous and giving often to the Lord God and to other people

               Taking refuge in the Lord God

               Doing good

               Refusing to fret

               Refraining from doing harm

               Speaking up for justice

A Lord worth loving looks like…

               The Lord God giving you the desires of your heart

               The Lord God laughing at the wicked

               The Lord God upholding the righteous

               The Lord God exalting you with an inheritance of a place

               The Lord God delighting in your way

               The Lord God refusing to abandon you

               The Lord God helping you, rescuing you, and saving you

               A life worth living is built on the foundation of a relationship with a Lord worth loving.  That relationship begins with the tender mercy and amazing grace and unconditional love of our Heavenly Father.  Any relationship you have or desire to have with the Lord God begins with the initiative your Heavenly Father takes to draw you close to His heart. The Lord is worth loving!

               Your relationship with the Lord God is made possible by God’s gift of His Son Jesus to our world and to you.  Through the obedience of Jesus to your Heavenly Father you learn how to live and love as well as trust and obey your Heavenly Father. In Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, Jesus shows you how to live a life worth living!

               If you desire to live in a loving relationship with Jesus, you begin by opening your heart, mind, and soul to the love of the Lord.  You receive Jesus’ gift of love.  You receive Jesus’ gift of salvation. You receive Jesus’ gift of His of salvation by grace alone, by faith alone, and through Christ alone. Then, you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and the promise of His presence and power.

               My prayer is you will live a life worth living with a Lord worth loving.  May you know the Lord’s delight in you as you take delight in the Lord’s goodness and grace and generosity in your life.

Reflect

Write down three things that confirm your life is worth living.  What are the things that cause you to doubt your life is worth living?  Write down four things that convince you the Lord God is deserving of your love, your obedience, and your service.  Where might you need to make an adjustment or two to align the focus of your life and the devotion of your love with the Lord’s desire for your life?

Pray

Lord God, I confess there are some days when I don’t know if my life is worth living.  There is too much fear or too much sadness or too much anger to be convinced this is how you intend my life to be.  Forgive me for not trusting you more, obeying you more, and serving you more.  Draw me closer to your heart so I may live a life worth living and to live with a Lord worth loving.  I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. 

Act

Invite a Christian friend to coffee so the two of you can visit about the struggle to live a life worth living and to live with a Lord worth loving.  What are the temptations?  What are the challenges?  How is it going right now for each of you?
