Revealed At Breakfast!

It would make no sense for the power of God’s love to raise the Son of God (Jesus) from death to life if there were no witnesses.  The one event that changes everything for our life today and for our life beyond the grave would make little difference if there were no first-hand witnesses of the miracle.

In this final week of this series, I would like to draw your attention to an occasion in which the Risen Christ revealed Himself to other people.  The fourth time is when Jesus revealed Himself at breakfast on the beach.  We hear the report from the Apostle John.

In John 21:1-14 we hear; “After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he showed himself in this way.  Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples.  Simon Peter said to them, ‘I am going fishing.’ They said to him, ‘We will go with you.’ They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.  Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach, but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.  Jesus said to them, ‘Children, you have no fish, have you?’  They answered him, ‘No.’  He said to them, ‘Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some.’  So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish.  That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’  When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he had taken it off, and jumped into the sea.  But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off.  When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread.  Jesus said to them, ‘Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.’  So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them, and though there were so many, the net was not torn.  Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’  Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ because they knew it was the Lord.  Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them and did the same with the fish.  This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.”

Most people who hear this account in the Gospel of John focus on the unexpected and miraculous catch of fish.  To be sure, the catch is unusual and even life-altering.  And yet, the part of the account that catches my attention is the breakfast on the beach.

There is fried fish cooked over an open fire.  I am not sure if there were hush puppies that morning but there was bread offered as part of the meal.  In Louisiana, that would be called a “Fish Po’boy!”

After a long and discouraging night of fishing, the disciples would have eagerly welcomed a hot breakfast.  But, it is not even the food that is so special.  What is most special is that the Risen Christ is the host for this breakfast on the beach.

The Risen Jesus reveals Himself to the disciples early in the morning while they are still exhausted and still confused about the miraculous catch of fish.  The Risen Savior reveals Himself while they were still working their job and while they are enjoying breakfast on the beach.

The Risen Christ will reveal Himself in a personal and intimate way while you are at work.  The Risen Christ will reveal Himself in a powerful and loving way while you are eating breakfast.  The Risen Christ will reveal Himself in a grace-full and mercy-full way while you are engaged in the ordinary things of your life.

I encourage you to take a few moments each day for the next week to write down where and when you have experienced or witnessed the presence of the Risen Christ in your life or in the life of a friend.  Journal each of these occurrences no matter how ordinary they may seem.  Note the place and the people as well as what happened.

Over the last four weeks, we have been reminded that the Risen Christ reveals Himself in ordinary places like a cemetery, at supper, on a road, at home, at work, and at breakfast.  Jesus will show up wherever and whenever He wants to those who are eager to meet Him again.

A simple and ancient prayer, expresses the desire of our heart today; “Come, Lord Jesus, Come!”

When the Risen Christ reveals Himself to you or the people about whom you care, hearts will fill with delight in the Lord.

Take Delight In The Lord!
