“I Can’t Get There!”

“I Can’t Get There!”

Our daughter purchased a new bicycle when she was visiting at our home. There is a very nice paved city bike trail that runs just on the other side of our backyard. I asked if she could ride her bike on the city trail to a particular location about five or six miles away. She responded; “I can’t get there from here.”

Her response started me to thinking about our spiritual journey. Sometimes the path that takes us closer to the heart of Jesus is clear and straight; there seem to be few obstacles and lots of smooth traveling.

However, there are other times when the path that leads us closer to the heart of Jesus is filled with all kinds of bumps and challenges. Those inconveniences make the path much less clear and often filled with a variety of detours. Sometimes we can feel lost on our journey to intimacy with Christ.

After the Israelite people are set free from slavery in Egypt, they embark on a journey to the Promised Land…a special place filled with the Lord God’s blessings. However, it is not long until the obstacles and the challenges of that journey to the gift of the Lord God leave the Israelite people feeling lost.

At one point, they complain to their leader, Moses. In Numbers 17:12 we hear; “The Israelites said to Moses, ‘We are perishing; we are lost; all of us are lost!’” It is not just a few of the people who feel lost. The people complain because they all felt lost on this journey to the blessing of the Lord God.

There was a season when I felt lost. I prayed more, I read my Bible more, and I worshipped the Lord every week. I continued to tithe our income, serve the poor, and share Jesus’ love with other people. And yet, I felt lost. It was a season filled with more darkness and doubt than with light and assurance.

When I was complaining the most and pleading with Jesus the most, the light broke through the darkness and the confidence of God’s presence broke through my doubt. I was reminded that even when I still feel lost in my journey toward the heart of Jesus, He is actively working to bring me back to Him.

In Ezekiel 34:16 we hear the Lord God’s promise to those who feel lost. The Lord God says; “I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strays, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice.”

When I am lost, the Lord is seeking to find me. When I have strayed off the path leading to intimacy with Christ, the Lord is bringing me back to Him. Jesus will heal the hurt and strengthen the places I feel weak and inadequate. The Lord will forgive my sin, give mercy when I don’t ask for it, and save me when I don’t deserve being saved.

In Luke 19:10 Jesus says; “For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.” If you feel like you cannot get to the heart of Jesus from where you are right now, remember that Jesus is seeking to find you and is ready to save you. Jesus will bring you back to His heart…even if it costs Jesus His life!

Jesus came to our world to find you, restore you, and live in you. Jesus will go to any length to set you on the right path. In Luke 15:4 Jesus asks; “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it?”

Jesus is more concerned about the one who is lost than about all those who already know Him and are abiding in His presence and love. You matter to Jesus; Jesus loves you, suffered for you, died for you, and gave you the Holy Spirit because He wants you to live with Him in this life and in the life to come in heaven.

When you feel like you cannot get there from here, don’t give up on Jesus’ desire to forgive you or on the Holy Spirit’s power to steer you to the right path or on the Father’s grace to receive you back again.

When you remain on the path that leads to the heart of Jesus, you will know you are loved by the Son of God and accepted by your Heavenly Father.

When you have this assurance in the goodness and grace and generosity of God, your heart will overflow with delight in the Lord.

Take Delight In The Lord!
